EXCERPT

The jazz trio entered and took their bows to applause. As the first haunting notes of the saxophone began to tell its plaintive tale, Delilah jiggled her father’s arm and whispered, “Daddy, trade me places. The lady in front of me has big hair.”

Sawyer obliged and when he took the seat beside Bridget, his arm brushed hers on the armrest.

“Sorry,” they said in unison, each pulling their arms away.

But, as the music overtook them, they both relaxed and Sawyer found himself enjoying Bridget’s close proximity, the appealing scent of her lightly perfumed soap and apple-scented shampoo and, especially, the way she became so completely absorbed in the music that she no longer jerked away when their arms touched.

The concert wasn’t long so there was no intermission. The musicians played straight through, keeping the hypnotic spell of the music going, carrying the deepest human emotions in the slide of the trombone and the sigh of the clarinet. All too soon, though, the music ended and the lights came back up.

Sawyer realized that Bridget was nestled into him and his arm was resting along the back of her chair. He turned to her and they locked eyes and the buzzing crowd seemed to fade away like they didn’t exist.

He realized that he would do anything he could to help and protect her.

She has also published several short stories and poems with various literary publications and writes devotions.
